Stage Left was invited by the Alberta Workplan Task Force (a component
of the Centre for Excellence in Child Welfare) to collaborate with
members of the Sturgeon Lake Cree First Nation on creating an Image
and Forum Theatre performance, called The Third Generation.
About twenty active members of the Journey Towards Empowerment program
participated in the project, and enacted stories from the generational
consequences of the Residential School legacy and its impact on this
First Nation. A sharing circle followed the Forum, where three generations
engaged in dialogue about how to continue the cycle of healing in
their community.

As part of our work with the Building Aboriginal Health Teaching
and Learning Capacity Project with Dr. Lindsay Crowshoe, Faculty
of Family Medicine (U of C), we created a simulated patient (based
on Forum Theatre tenets) called Dorothy Plume. Dorothy is a Blackfoot
woman who is worried about the potential of having diabetes, so
she goes to the doctor seeking advice. Its up to the students
how to advise her. This diabetes teaching session provided medical
learners with an opportunity to engage with an Aboriginal patient,
examining the intricacies of communication across culture, how Aboriginal
people frame illness, and treatment/ management concerns.

The Whole Story: Reflections on Relationships encourages
first year medical learners, residents, and physicians to reflect
on their attitudes toward Aboriginal populations and on how those
attitudes might affect their clinical interaction with Aboriginal
patients. The Forum presents cultural perspectives on tobacco, health
care, and clinical interaction, encouraging medical participants
to examine their own perspectives and how they might conflict with
their Aboriginal patients.

In support of the United Nation's Day for the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination, Forest Lawn High's Drama 30 Class engaged in a personal
exploration of the ways racism has touched their lives. Using Forum
and Image Theater techniques, the class presented scenes demonstrating
the many ways in which students can hurt one another (bullying,
teasing, harassment, violence, exclusion, assault, and so on) because
of their differences. Out of each scene arose opportunity to initiate
discourse, promote healing, and foster respect for the many different
cultures housed in one high school.

Also in support of the United Nation's Day for the Elimination of
Racial Discrimination, Forest Lawn High's Culture Club used Image
Theatre to offer their peers a great many situations depicting the
cultural chaos that can result from misunderstanding and ignorance
of one another.

This interactive workshop for culturally diverse young women used
interactive theater techniques to identify barriers in their lives
and come away with strategies for a successful future in a new country.
The use of Image Theater provided a system of physical exercises,
aesthetic games, imaging techniques, and spcial improvizations through
which to turn the practice of theater into an effective tool for
the comprehension of social problems and the search for their solutions.
